Professor Emmanuel Nwoke Amadi
1948 – 2019

Professor Emmanuel Nwoke Amadi was a lot of things to a lot people, to some a father, grandfather, husband, friend, foe, and to some others a mentor. A man you can liken to Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King JR; Prof. E. N. Amadi stood for what he believed in, fought for what he believed in, even when he stood alone. One of his friends once described him as a content man.

E. N. Amadi was born on the 7th July 1948 into the family of Chief Jorde Jacob ‘Saro Amadi and Mrs Nchoo Janet Amadi (Nee Olube) of Ejamah clan, Ebubu in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. He was the second child and son of both his mother and the entire family. As at his death on the 19th day of June 2019, he was survived by the following siblings; Engr Hector Chinyere Amadi, Ezinne Mrs Joy Akate Lale, Mimida Grace Amadi, Loveday Agadi Amadi, Ekona Mercy Nwidaa, Owate Esther Ekiye, Igwe Victor Amadi, Ejire Believe Amadi and Demba Beatrice Amadi and a host of others.

Married Life

E. N. Amadi was survived by:

  1. Mrs Rose Tungboere Amadi (Wife)
  2. Mr Jorde Jacob Amadi (Son)
  3. Mrs Akaate Janet Ejovi (Daughter)
  4. Master Efecha Ethan Ejovi (Grandson)
  5. Miss Emuejevoke Grace Ejovi (Grandson)

Prof. E. N. Amadi excelled in many facets of life; some areas people may say they did better than him but with no iota of doubt, to his children, he was second to none in loving and taking caring of them (Jorde and Akaate). He thought his children to love and nurtured them to the point where they learnt how to nurture each other.  His Children were his everything and he meant the world to them and even after his passing, he lives in their hearts.


His father, Jorde Jacob ’Saro Amadi was fascinated by school and as a result was one of the first few persons at Ejamah, Ebubu in Eleme to send his first two children to school at the same time. Prof. E. N. Amadi was one of the pioneer students of Ascension High School, Eleme and he attended it from 1962 through 1966 and obtained his West African School Certificate in 1966. He also, obtained his O’level GCE (London exam) in the same year. Prof. E. N. Amadi went to the United Kingdom for further studies and attended South, Glamorgan Institute of Higher and Further Education, Cardiff, UK from 1974 – 1977 where he obtained Ordinary National Diploma (Medical Lab. Science). He was admitted into the School of Medical Sciences, University of Bradford, UK in 1977 and obtained his first degree, Bachelor of Technology (Hons) in 1981. He also obtained AIMlT (Professional) in the same year.  He attended School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Bradford, UK from 1983 -1986. Daddy obtained his Ph. D (Doctor of philosophy) in 1986. He was dedicated and brilliant; as a result his supervisor insisted that he should further develop his research which would have been a master’s degree into a Ph. D.

E. N. Amaid’s studied in the United Kingdom; he won the following awards and prices:

  1. Best Overall Student (First year OND) from South, Glamorgan Institute of Higher and Further Education, Cardiff, UK.
  2. Postgraduate grant (Actinomycetes & Micrococci Research), University of Bradford (1985).
  3. Education Grant from Radley Charitable Trust, Cambridge (1985).
  4. The Leche Trust, London (1986).
  5. Vice Chancellor’s Research Initiative Grant, University of Bradford (1986).

Work Experience

E. N. Amadi worked as a junior ‘B’ Technician from 1975 – 1977 and from 1979 to 1980 in Cardiff UK. He proceeded to work as a Laboratory technician for the North East Authority, Dundalk Republic of Island. He worked with the Rivers State University from 1987 to retirement in 2019; He commenced work with his doctorate in 1987 and grew in the system to the level of a Professor in 2006. As at his demise, he was a contract staff of the University. While on sabbatical, Prof. E. N. Amadi also, worked in Eleme Petrochemical Company, Eleme in 1996, Shell Petroleum Development Company Ltd in 2009/2010, Delta State University, Abraka in 2016/2017.

Academic and Administrative Activities

E. N. Amadi was involved in a lot of academic activities in his heydays, from 1987 – 2018. To mention but a few;

1987 Coordinator, Microbiology Programme, Department of Biological Sciences. RSU

1999/00 Head, Department of Biological sciences, RSU

2000 Chairman, Ad-hoc Committee on Students Discipline, RSU

2000 Chairman, Task Force on Electricity Consumption on Campus, RSU

2001 Coordinator/Chief Examiner, Matriculation examination programme (MEP), RSU.

2003 Chairman, Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the use of Forged Certificates to gain Employment, RSU.

2006 Head,Department of Applied & Environmental Biology, RSU.

2007 Director, Academic Planning Unit, RSU; As usual, daddy was very dedicated and it was during his tenure in this capacity that the University received 99.9% accreditation from NUC for its programs, a rating the university had lost before his appointment as DAP.

2008 Chairman, Ad-hoc Committee on the investigation of alleged tampering and alteration of student’s examination results.

2011- 2014 Dean, Post Graduate School, RSU.

2012 – 2014 Chairman, Committee of Deans of Postgraduate Schools in Nigerian Universities.

2016/2017 Sabbatical with Delta State University, Abraka.

He served as an external examiner to various Universities such as University of Port Harcourt, University of Nsuka, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, University of Botswana, Gaborone  and served as a member of various strategic committees in Rivers State University such as Regularization Interview Panel for Junior staff, Ad-hoc Committee on Levies Charged by Faculties, Panel to Investigate action of student in Hostel E, Ad-hoc Committee on Sale of Handouts and Textbooks, Selection of Registrar committee, Business Committee of Senate, Ad-hoc Committee Investigating Missing Computers in the Department of Architecture, Ad-hoc committee on Fixing of Grades, Special Senate Ceremonial Committee, Council/Senate Committee on Staff Discipline, Senate Ceremonial committee

Christian Life

E. N. Amadi was a devout Anglican and met all his obligations to the church. He was a member of The Parish Church Council (PCC) of St James Anglican church Port Harcourt in 2015.

Extra Curricular Activities

E. N. Amadi was full of life and activities; If he was not putting all his efforts in achieving a task he set by himself or by virtue of work, he was with friends making them laugh or like most of them would humorously say, “Amadi don come again o”.

 E. N. Amadi was a friend to Goldash United Football Club Port Harcourt, Secretary of Eleme Social Club from 1991 – 1992, He was Secretary to Academic Senior Staff Union (ASUU), RSU chapter in his earlier years as a lecturer from 1991-1993, Spokesman Ejamah clan delegation to the Senate Committee on the Environment Re; Ochani – Ejamah Spillage of 1970 and Chairman Investigation Panel for the Purchase of PTA financed school bus, Our Lady of Fatima College, Port Harcourt.

Those who knew him could attest to the fact that he was always full of energy and high spirit in all his dealings. Prof. E. N. Amadi was a goal getter and his passion to purposeful living motivated his children, friends, family, mentees and many others to set smart goals for themselves and pursue them until they achieved success. He was a kind disciplinarian.
